Binge-watching the Handmaid's Tale
Updated: Oct 25
I just finished binge-watching The
Handmaid's Tale on Hulu. A college friend who was an avid reader gave me the book centuries ago. The Hulu version was as scary as I recalled the writing to be. However, the scariest part of the book was...me. Seriously, who the hell binge-watches women getting beaten? In my defense the soundtrack was amazing and I loved the costumes.
I kept hearing that the series finale would be fantastic as all the evil-doers get what's coming to them. (Spoiler Alert) Commander Fred was obviously an asshole, but I expect it of men. I have this twisted belief that men being jerks should never be surprising. Notice I said twisted because I know it's not intellectually true. Instead, the real crime is when women are horrible to other women.
Most of the women I know are caring, empathetic, and sensitive, the polar opposite of Aunt Lydia. It was a release to see the shit beaten out of her mid-series, but it wasn't enough. Commander Fred did help keep June alive and in his mind gave her respect. Aunt Lydia enjoyed using her cattle prod to intimidate and scar women. I asked my therapist if it was deviant of me to be willing to forgive Commander Fred while wanting Aunt Lydia "on the wall." She said no I wasn't perverted...praise be.
Is there anyone in your life you would like to shove a cattle prod up the butt of?
